A Canadian eTA is valid for entry by air only and must be used at an approved Canadian airport.
What You Need to Know
The eTA is an entry requirement specifically for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. It is not valid for entry by land or sea. Travelers arriving in Canada by car, bus, train, or boat, including on a cruise ship, must have a different travel document, such as a visitor visa, depending on their nationality.
Our Recommendation
If you’re flying into Canada, your eTA will be valid at all international airports. However, if you plan to enter by land or sea, verify whether a visa is required instead. Always check the entry requirements for your travel route using the Sherpa° Travel Requirements Tool.
A Quick Tip
Bring a digital or printed copy of your eTA approval and the passport you used for your application when flying to Canada, even though your eTA is electronically linked.
