A Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are travelling to Canada by air. It’s electronically linked to your passport and allows for short stays in Canada, usually up to six months at a time.
🔐 How Long Is an eTA Valid?
Your eTA is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new eTA.
✈️ What Does an eTA Allow You to Do?
With a valid eTA, you can:
Fly to Canada as often as you like while the eTA is valid
Stay in Canada for short visits, typically up to six months per entry
Transit through a Canadian airport on your way to another destination
You do not need an eTA for travel within Canada after arriving.
❗ Important to Know
While an eTA lets you board a flight to Canada, it does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival, you must present your passport and any supporting documents (such as a U.S. Green Card, if applicable) to the border services officer. You’ll need to show that you meet all Canadian entry requirements.
