An ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a travel authorization required for eligible travelers visiting the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It’s not a visa, but it’s mandatory for those who want to travel to the U.S. without one.
🛂 Who Needs an ESTA?
If you’re a national of a Visa Waiver Program country and plan to travel to the U.S. for tourism, business, or transit for 90 days or less, you’ll need an approved ESTA before boarding your flight or cruise.
🧾 What Does an ESTA Do?
An approved ESTA:
- Authorizes you to board a flight to the U.S.
- Is electronically linked to your passport
- Allows for multiple entries over a two-year period (or until your passport expires)
It does not guarantee entry into the U.S.; that decision is made by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at your point of entry.
🔍 How Does It Work?
The application is completed online via a secure government system. You’ll need to provide:
- Biographic details
- Passport information
- A recent headshot photo
- Travel plans
The system processes your details and provides a quick response, often within a few hours.
⏳ When Should I Apply?
We recommend applying for your ESTA as soon as you begin planning your trip, and no later than 72 hours before departure.
Sherpa° will walk you through the steps and help ensure your information is accurate and compliant with U.S. entry requirements.
💡 Important Notes
- Your passport must be valid for the entire stay
- A new ESTA is required if:
- You get a new passport
- You change your name or gender
- Your country of citizenship changes
- Your circumstances change (e.g. a criminal conviction or medical issue)
- An ESTA does not replace a visa. If you already hold a valid U.S. visa, you do not need an ESTA.
