If you're traveling to Kenya, Tanzania, or both, you now need travel health insurance to enter. Kenya and Tanzania each have their own, and one does not cover the other, so if you're visiting both countries you'll need insurance for each. Here's what to do.
🇰🇪 Kenya
You need travel health insurance to enter Kenya. It's required by the government and is separate from your Electronic travel authorization (eTA).
What you need to do:
- Buy the insurance online before you travel. You can buy it on Kenya's official insurance website (insurance.ecitizen.go.ke), or when you apply for your Kenya eTA.
- Use the same passport details for your insurance and your eTA.
- After your eTA is approved, you can download your policy at insurance.ecitizen.go.ke.
Good to know:
- It costs roughly USD 44 to 52 and lasts about 3 months.
- Travel insurance from your home country will not count. You must buy the Kenyan insurance.

🇹🇿 Tanzania (including Zanzibar)
You need travel insurance to enter Tanzania. It's required by the government and is separate from your visa. Which one you buy depends on where you arrive in Tanzania first (either Tanzania mainland or Zanzibar).
What you need to do:
- If you arrive on the Tanzania mainland first (for example, Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro), buy the mainland insurance at inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz. This also covers you if you continue to Zanzibar.
- If you arrive in Zanzibar first, buy the Zanzibar insurance at inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz. This also covers you if you continue to the mainland.
- Buy it online before you travel, and keep your confirmation.
If you already bought the Zanzibar insurance but arrive on the mainland first, you'll still need the mainland insurance.
Good to know:
- It costs USD 44 per adult. Children aged 3 to 17 pay half price, and children under 3 are free. It lasts up to 92 days.
- Travel insurance from your home country will not count. You must buy the Tanzanian insurance.
