What changed?
As of June 1, 2026, travellers departing directly from the United States to Cuba are required to carry a Cuban visa that was issued in the United States. This requirement comes from the Cuban government and is enforced by airlines at US departure airports. Visas issued outside the United States may not be accepted for these direct departures.
How does this affect the eVisa I purchased through Sherpa?
The Cuban eVisa purchased through Sherpa is issued by an international provider based outside the United States. Because of the June 1 change, this eVisa may not be accepted if you are flying directly from the United States to Cuba. We want you to be aware of this before you travel, so you can make sure you have the correct document.
What do I need to do before I fly?
If you are departing directly from the United States, contact your airline before your travel date to confirm their current requirements and how to obtain a US-issued Cuban visa. Airlines have been providing the required documents at US departure airports. We strongly recommend arranging this in advance and having your visa ready before check-in.
I'm only connecting through the United States. Does this apply to me?
If your trip originates in another country and you are only transiting through the United States, the US-issued requirement does not apply to you in the same way. The change affects travellers whose journey to Cuba begins in the United States. If you are unsure how your itinerary is classified, check with your airline.
I have already travelled. What if I had to buy another visa at the airport?
If your Sherpa eVisa could not be used and you had to purchase a replacement, please contact us. If you are a US passport holder, you may be eligible for a refund.
Can I get a refund if I haven't travelled yet?
If you purchased a Cuban eVisa through us for a direct US departure and are concerned it will not be accepted, contact our support team, and we'll help. US passport holders affected by this change may be eligible for a full refund.
