What is an Embassy Visa?
An embassy visa is a traditional paper visa issued by the government of the country you intend to visit. Unlike eVisas or eTAs, this type of visa cannot be obtained online.
The application process typically requires an in-person visit to an embassy or consulate, where you'll submit the necessary documents for review and approval.
How do I get an Embassy Visa?

Here’s how the process usually works:
-
Check official requirements
Visit the destination country’s government or embassy website. Most countries provide a list of required documents online. You can use our travel requirements tool to find helpful government resources. -
Prepare your paperwork
This may include:- A completed visa application form
- A valid passport with at least one or more blank pages
- Photocopies of key documents (passport, itinerary, financial proof, etc.)
- Passport-sized photos
-
Book an appointment
Many embassies require you to schedule a visit in advance to submit your documents or attend an interview. -
Attend your appointment
Bring both originals and photocopies of your documents. Some applications may also require biometric data or a visa fee payment at the time of submission.
Important Notes
- Processing times can vary from a few days to several weeks, depending on the destination and the type of visa.
- Embassy visas are often needed for longer stays, work or study, or non-tourism travel.
- Some travelers may be required to apply through an embassy if they don’t qualify for an eVisa or eTA.
